Intercol has several resins and powders available that can improve the properties of PLA and other biopolymers. Those resins and powders can be based on several technologies, which will mostly be Vinyl Acetate baced. Vinyl acetate products can be partially produced already from biobased feedstock.
Properties that can be improved with Vinyl acetate powders & resins:
- Impact strength
- Adhesion to other surfaces
- Heat sealability
- Melt strength
- Flexibility
- Water resistance
- Tackiness of extruded PLA films
Vinyl acetate can be found compostable in mixtures with biopolymers. It depends on the exact grade, the biopolymer, and the final vinyl acetate content. Typical PLA blends docontain 10%-20% Vinyl acetate. But already with 1% improvements of the properties can be measured.
Other biopolymers that can improve the above mentioned properties can be:
- PBAT
- Starch (Wheat, Tapioca, Potato)
- Dextrin
- Casein
- Protein
- Aliphatic Polyesters
- Cellulose
Properties of Vinyl Acetate powders and resins
Most VA powders are water solluble, but will often have a milky appearance. VA resins can be 100% transparent, and will be solluble depending on the sollubility of the biopolymer. VA powders are water solluble, but can improve the water resistance and adhesion of starch products for example.
